Famous People Who Practice(d) Naturism
Benjamin Franklin, U. S. statesman and inventor was a practicing 18th century nudist! He took his "air baths" by sitting in the buff in front of an open window.
John Adams, U. S. President regularly swam nude in the Potomac river. Anne Royall, a journalist, heard of Adam's early morning skinny dips. After being refused interviews with the President several times, she went to the river, gathered his clothes and sat on them until he agreed to speak to her. Before this, no woman journalist had ever interviewed a president. (Way to go, Annie!)
Fred Rogers, creator and star of the children's program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was 71 years old; has been married to his wife for 48 years; is an ordained Presbyterian minister; and took a morning swim every day in the nude.
C. S. Lewis, the Oxford Don and honored Christian author and lecturer enjoyed the Oxford tradition of male skinny-dipping and made many naturist-friendly references in his fine works. More and more Christians are discovering nudity as they find that Jesus died for every believer's shame. Being restored to the lost grace of Adam and Eve when Jesus gave up His Ghost on Calvary, all those who find God find grace also.
Billy Graham; The well-respected and accomplished evangelist was known to enjoy skinny-dipping in the White House pool with President Lyndon Johnson.
Amy Grant, the beloved pop-gospel singer caused quite a stir in the mid-80s when she talked about skinny-dipping and sunning nude on an African beach. Craven Walker, inventor of the Lava Lamp, was also a nudist. He also owned a nudist resort on England's southern coast. I thought it would be fun to dig up other famous nudists (well, not literally…I think there's a law against that), so here's a partial list I found on the "Buffalo Skin" website:
Henry David Thoreau was also a frequent skinny-dipper.
Alexander Graham Bell was a skinny-dipper and nude sunbather.
George Bernard Shaw, Walt Whitman, Eugene O'Neill, and painter Thomas Eakins argued in favor of social nudity.
President Theodore Roosevelt frequently swam nude in Rock Creek Park in Washington, once skinny-dipping with the French diplomat, Jules Jusserand.
President Lyndon Johnson occasionally swam nude with guests in the white house pool, including evangelist Billy Graham.
Senator Edward Kennedy has been photographed skinny-dipping at public beaches in Florida.
John F. Kennedy, nudity had been common around the White House pool.
Many U.S. congressmen enjoy nude recreation, albeit segregated: U.S. Senate members may use the Russell Senate Office Building Pool in the nude (the few female Senators make appointments to ensure there won't be males on hand), and Congressmen also sunbathed nude on the Speaker's Porch until one day in 1973 when Rep. Patricia Schroeder wandered into the gathering inadvertently.
John D. MacArthur, a billionaire insurance man frequently went skinny-dipping, and left a beach to the state of Florida, intending that a portion be designated clothing-optional (a wish that has been spurned); word has it that MacArthur went skinny-dipping with Walt Disney at this beach in the late 1960s.
Robert McNamara, World Bank president, and former U.S. Defense Secretary skinny-dips regularly.
Roger Baldwin, American Civil Liberties Union founder, is also a skinny dipper.
Charles F. Richter, the co-inventor of the earthquake measuring system, was a lifelong nudist and Naturist.
Actress Lynn Redgrave and her family practice social nudism.
Actresses Bridget Fonda and Brigitte Bardot enjoy social nudity.
The late actor Gary Merrill advocated nudism.
Christy Brinkley openly admits to frequenting nude beaches.
The late Dr. Seuss published approval of a nudist philosophy, in one of his first books.
According to Radio Times, here are some more:
Helen Mirren
Yes, she’s a national treasure and once played The Queen, but the outspoken actress says she finds nudity liberating. “I’m a naturist at heart,” Mirren once revealed. “I love being on beaches where everyone is naked. Ugly people, beautiful people, old people, whatever. It’s so unisexual and so liberating.”
Kevin Bacon
The Apollo 13 and Footloose actor is probably better known in the UK for his EE phone adverts than his naturist tendencies. Yet behind closed doors he likes to strip off and wander about. “Not when the nanny is around,” admits Bacon. “But I [get naked] with my wife and kids. There’s something therapeutic about nudity… take away the Gucci or Levi’s and we’re all the same.”
Robbie Williams
We all know Take That singer Robbie Williams was once a bit of a rebel. Nowadays, his life is a lot more sedate – he is married, has a daughter and another baby on the way. Yet he still has a wild nudist streak. “I enjoy nakedness, I am a bit of a naturist at heart,” says Williams. “When it comes down to it, I just like taking my pants down.”
Kate Humble
Countryfile presenter and nature lover Kate Humble recently told Radio Times that when the urge takes her she can’t resist stripping off and jumping around. “Sometimes you’re in a very beautiful place and there is something very celebratory about just having a little nudey dance,” she said, later adding that she thinks everyone should give naturism a try. “There’s something joyous about it and I urge everyone to try it,” she told the Sunday People. “My husband and I danced naked in the middle of the desert in Jordan once. If you can’t get your kicks in that incredibly innocent, joyful way, then the world is not a good place.”
Billy Connolly
Scottish comic Connolly has absolutely no qualms about getting his clothes off in public. The bigger the activity the better, it seems. He’s done the 134-metre Nevis Bungy Jump stark naked. ”I usually dance bare bum; I did it in London’s Piccadilly once, but I was looking for something different so I thought I’d try bungee jumping,” he told the Southland Times in New Zealand. ”It was totally exhilarating and lovely, and probably the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
Celine Dion
The Canadian mega-star allegedly wishes “we were all naked all the time”. She reportedly told The Sun newspaper that she’s “always believed it is what’s underneath that counts. If we were all forced to be naked, perhaps we would start to see that a little bit more,” adding “I’d like my audience to be naked, too”.
Justin Timberlake
This singer-songwriter is not shy when it comes to his body parts. In 2011’s Friends with Benefits, he bared pretty much all with his co-star Mila Kunis. However, according to a collection of quotes in a book by Michael Heatley about the star, Timberlake was also tempted to strip off at a nudist beach in France. “I was born naked and I’m going to die naked,” said the Grammy Award-winning artist, “I don’t see anything wrong with it.”
Brad Pitt
He could well have the most famous torso in Hollywood, we’ve seen him half naked as Tyler Durden in Fight Club, Achilles in Troy, JD in Thelma, and Louise… alas it’s only at home that he takes it ALL off. “I’m naked all the time at home,” said Pitt in an interview with CNN.
